State of the Studio 2026

Our annual look back at the previous year and what's ahead.

State of the Studio 2026

We’ve skipped this the past couple of years, more from busyness than intent, so we’re overdue for a big picture update on how things are going with Brain&Brain.

For us, 2025 was a much-needed recovery year. The previous year had been a tough one for various reasons, and it took us a little while to uncurl and accept that things had quieted down.

That’s not to say this year wasn’t eventful! We co-organized our second local games showcase, Brooke was coerced into giving a talk, David got a grant to create an animatic for a screenplay he wrote, Burly Men at Sea found a cozy exhibition space in a Japanese library, and, oh yeah: we announced Raincaster!

All in all, 2025 was probably our most creatively energizing year since Burly Men at Sea. It’s been such a boost to round the corner with Raincaster and move into the final phase.

What’s Next

We’ve learned not to talk about the future with certainty, but we’re working toward a lot of big milestones this year.

Raincaster development continues on track, with more announcements to come. This month, we’re migrating the game from our prototype build in Unity to what will be its final form in Godot, where Dan Fountain has been building us a custom editor that’s a joy to work with. With this, we’re also getting to implement another piece of the gameplay that we’re excited for. We’ll show you more as soon as we can, promise!

Also, a certain excellently bearded game has its 10th(!) anniversary coming up this fall, and we have a project that’s been secretly in the works for that. Hint: it’s better than a game update or art prints.

To those who are or have been supporting us monthly, your generosity is more appreciated than ever, and it has helped us to stretch self-funding this far. (If you’d like to become a supporter, you can do that from your account.) We’re also grateful to those who have wishlisted, shared the game, and sent kind words. It all helps.

Alright: 2026. Let’s do our best!
