We’re back from our travels, just in time to release Burly Men at Sea 1.2 for iOS! This update is full of fixes and improvements, but we’ve also added two big features for free:

Sticker Pack

We had fun with this one. It features twenty stickers from the game, mostly animated, and a few beardly decals. If you already own the game and iOS 10, you’ll find it in Messages after updating.

Apple TV

It’s here! We’ve been quietly working to bring the game to Apple TV with solid support for the remote, and now for the first time, you can play Burly Men at Sea on your TV. It’s also universal, so if you already own the game for iOS, you now own both!

Still don’t know what this is about? Allow IndieHangover to explain:

“Each possible story in Burly Men at Sea has been assigned at number, and by going to burlymenatsea.com/mystery and entering that number, you’ll reveal the hidden treasure of this game. Each of these numerical codes corresponds to an actual print book that tells the story of that particular play through.”

We’re incredibly proud of how they came out: fifty pages printed and bound here in the U.S. with debossed fabric hardcover. The artwork itself is a stylized representation of the game, unique to the books. We wanted it to feel as if an artifact from the game world is sitting on your shelf, AND IT DOES.

Also! A few of the books will be on display with the game at Now Play This in London next month, alongside a pretty incredible lineup of experimental games. If you’ll be there, send us a photo (and know that we’re envious)!

⚓️

Our beardy fellas will be making mischief in this year’s Mild Rumpus at GDC! That cozy little patch of weirdly adorable games in Moscone West has always been one of our favorite things at GDC, so we’re super excited to have Burly Men at Sea in there.

Also! David will be there Monday giving a little talk about the game, at 3pm. Come?

2017 State of the Studio

We’ve been fairly quiet since releasing Burly Men at Sea, so it’s time for some answers to those burning questions about what’s next for Brain&Brain.

  1. Where have we been?! Well, a few places. We spent a couple of months in LA while David picked up some temp work on a movie, and visited family over the holidays. Since then, we’ve actually been looking for a new home base to rest our weary nomad bones.
  2. So no more travel? May it never be! We don’t plan to ever give that up, but we are taking a break from living out of our car-closet. Our longterm plan was always to have an affordable home base that would allow us to travel often, so this is more like stage two.
  3. Where’s this home base? Get ready for it: Arkansas! To be precise, we’ll be living in a loft in this awesome old mill (photo above) in Fayetteville. It’s a secretly cool town in the Ozarks of northwest Arkansas a few hours from where Brooke grew up. We’ll be here saving up for the next stage: buying land for our future alpaca farm and gyrocopter (not entirely kidding).
  4. And making games? Some of that, too? Certainly. We’ve been busy with updates to Burly Men at Sea and its *mystery* tie-in (both coming very soon!) since Christmas, but our next focus is pre-production on a couple of new games we’re super excited about. More on that later.
  5. So Brain&Brain will live on? We’re asked often how Burly Men at Sea did financially, especially with the SteamSpy numbers not looking so great. Fortunately, it did far better on iOS than Steam, so we’re okay. We did have to get really scrappy for a little while, but we mostly have our feet back under us and even have plans in the works to bring those Steam numbers up. And anyway, we couldn’t imagine quitting.

So that covers most of what we haven’t said in months, though there was also that crazy IGF honorable mention for Excellence in Narrative, and several big things we have yet to announce. And we’ll be at GDC, so hugs there if you see us!

More news soon!
